May 2024 I was invited to design and facilitate a participatory drawing event at WOW (Women of the World) festival at the vast iconic new culture venue Factory International in Manchester. The festival took place over one weekend and attracted a diverse crowd of women, girls and non-binary people to engage in workshops, events, and talks to explore WOW’s mission: to believe that a gender equal world is possible.
I created a drop-in artwork making use of coloured masking tape which is a direct and user-friendly way of making drawings and patterns on a large scale. The drawing was around 7 metres long in the end, evolved across both days with a range of different people contributing to its making and looked great displayed high up above the festival site as a celebratory image, featuring dynamic life sized figures ‘breaking through the red tape’ …great fun and an effective ‘no mess’ and accessible process I’d try again in another public space context
